Know Your Club

Another great article from Coaching Outside the Box, and painfully true… if only clubs made it a priority to educate parents and coaches, and work together with other clubs, rather than work against each and play one up with their trophies and medals. Kids are missing out due to ego’s and unrealistic promises from clubs.

Coaching Outside the Box: Changing the Mindset in Youth Soccer

As we discuss in Coaching Outside the Box: Changing the Mindset in Youth Soccer we have NEVER found a club that focuses primarily on winning and short term success who doesn’t fabricate their true intentions. BUT WAIT!!! OMG!!! WHAT!?!?! WE FINALLY FOUND A CLUB THAT TOLD THE TRUTH!!!! CHECK THIS OUT AND SHARE IMMEDIATELY!!!

Mission Statement:

Our Soccer Club is a business. We focus primarily on driving profit margins and making as much money as we can. Therefore, we aim to have as many winning teams at each age group as possible because many parents who will pay our fees want their child to be part of a winning team, and/or perceive winning teams as success and a great place for their child to be developmentally. Therefore, our club is short-term results-oriented and we are 100% focused on winning as many tournaments and leagues as possible.

From this approach, we know that there will be so many casualties (kids dropping out of sport, losing interest in soccer due to bad experiences etc.), but this is not our concern. Furthermore, even though we are not doing what is optimal for kids’ best interests, we will still naturally have a small percentage of players who are genetically outstanding and will survive our approach and continuously having their own individual needs neglected in order to focus on building and employing winning teams. Additionally, some of these exceptional players will receive a college scholarship, and maybe even a minuscule amount of the tens of thousands of players that we coach may go on to experience playing professionally or even for the national team. This is very important for us and great for our business model. Because when this happens we can promote and market how these players reached these accolades SIMPLY because of how effective our club and coaching style is, and how powerful our training and philosophy (which we will claim is on ‘player development’) can be for young players. This in turn will attract so many more parents and players, allowing us to reach our main objective of making as much money as possible. We look forward to having you be part of our club, and allowing us to take your child to the ‘NEXT LEVEL’.

Thank You Team Managers

This past Friday, April 28th, the managers of the Fremont YSC Competitive Teams attended a workshop at the soccer office.

We are incredibly grateful for the willingness of the managers to volunteer their time and to be part of our soccer program. Our workshop covered important updates to the team folders which all mangers carry, along with updated information about the program, the direction the club is heading in, and the relationships we have built over the past few months.

The workshop was a great opportunity for all the managers to come together, socialize, and be familiar with all the faces of the club. We look forward to working with each and everyone of our managers, and look forward to adding many more managers over the coming seasons.

Team Snap

Fremont YSC has gone club wide with Team Snap in it’s Competitive Program, with all teams now using the communication platform. At the start of 2017 one of our goals was to improve the communication efforts between the club and its members. Team Snap is the first step in communication improvement, delivering instant notifications to all players with practice, game, and club event updates straight to their inbox’s, through text messaging service, and with push notifications on their smart phones.

The Magic Jersey

This weekend the vast majority of soccer clubs would have now had their first game of the season. This should be a great time for all players involved… however, it’s sadly not the case for many. We reflect the adult game on to kids, expecting to see what our professional idols do.

The jerseys the kids put on elevate them to adult status where mistakes are not OK, and you must win at all costs!

We can only control our own behavior and actions, and we at Fremont YSC will always put the kids at the forefront of youth soccer, behaving and acting in a away which benefits their all round individual development.

Evaluations for the 2017 season are open, and further information can be found on our Evaluations page – https://fremontyouthsoccer.com/evaluations/

Evaluations are a snapshot of a players current level of play, to which the player will then be assigned to a team of players of similar playing ability. All players are selected for a program at the evaluations so no player is cut from being able to play in one of our programs.

Our program is developmental focused, putting the individual player in to an environment they can play in to reach a higher level of play. Psychological factors are of high importance, making Fremont YSC approach to youth soccer a hybrid environment to create the 360 player. Enabling players to play without pressure, experience failure as a learning opportunity, and play freely to be creative and express their soccer skills.

Let the Games Begin

Over the coming weeks teams will either be in the full swing of their season, or starting their Spring season games.

  • We define our success as – DEVELOPMENT
  • We coach for – DEVELOPMENT
  • Our Club Development Plan is for – DEVELOPMENT

Our coaches are compensated for their skills in coaching, being able to get their point across and approaching youth sports as an environment for players to learn through making mistakes, and having fun. Our coaches are not compensated for win-loss ratios, division titles, and cup victories.

Support the coaches by being patient, understanding the process, and reaching out to them with an open for answering questions you may have so we can better develop education for both players and parents.

The following videos (Positive Coaching Alliance and the18) highlight the difficulties we face when challenged with people perceiving compensated coaches being there to win games, and why we coach – we do it for the kids.

Let the kids play, and support your coaches.

Julie Foudy (@JulieFoudy), a PCA National Advisory Board Member, played midfield for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team (1987-2004), winning two World Cup titles and two Olympic Gold Medals. A 2007 inductee into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, she now works as an ESPN Analyst and runs the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy, teaching leadership skills to youth.

In this clip, Foudy speaks with PCA at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention about the approach paid coaches take to winning and player development. She begins by acknowledging that coaches whose jobs depend on winning are in a tough position. However, she quickly conveys that this doesn’t make negative coaching behavior acceptable.

More importantly, Foudy strikes on the point that emphasizing winning over development is an impossible environment for kids to learn and grow. Making mistakes is a part of mastering any skill, and a young athlete will be fearful of failing when taking on a new challenge if a coach can’t concentrate more on development than the outcome on the scoreboard.

It’s All Coming Together

This past weekend the Fremont Youth Soccer staff were out on the fields bright and early to get the paint down on the field ready for the upcoming Spring season.

As always Don Hugie was a huge help in getting everything organized and doing all the messy work… even taking time out to give a big black spider a little cuddle!

We want to take this opportunity to thank Don for all his hard work, and constant willingness to volunteer his time to the club.
