The Methodology Behind Fremont YSC’s Foundation Phase: Swansea City Case Study

Swansea City Association Football Club, a Welsh professional football club based in Swansea, Wales, has a category 1 academy, the highest rating for academies in the Football Association system.

But what might surprise you is that academy success and status are not aligned to game outcomes, but instead the quality of the program being provided to the players.

For Swansea City and Fremont YSC, what goes into a quality program is a focus on psychological strength—the ability to adapt and persevere through challenges—with resilience and confidence being especially important and key for development.

These characteristics are strengthened through process-driven learning, and teaching players to have an open mindset leading to creativity on the field and not being afraid of making mistakes.

The result: tremendous growth for the individual.

Foundation Training Key Components

Vital to the training environment, the ball is moving for the majority of the time, with coaching interventions limited, and games designed to give players repetitions in different scenarios.

The Fremont YSC Foundation Methodology

Fremont YSC follows the same methodology from which Swansea City’s academy is based. For our players in the Foundation Phase (ages 9-12), our objective is to have players:

  • Develop a range of techniques/ability with both feet
  • Dominate 1v1 situations—1st and 2nd role
  • Become confident and creative without fear of mistakes
  • Nurture good habits

How to Support Your Foundation Phase Player

Each week, you’ll receive an outline for the week’s training explaining the individual elements and objectives of the training, along with the methods being used.

Review this information each week to better understand how we’re building independent, concrete thinkers, who are starting to grasp teamwork and their role in small group activities.

At Fremont YSC, we are proud to be different. We follow the standards set throughout the world, using modern coaching methods and a holistic approach to development, supporting growth of the whole person.
